10:45 - 12:30 2 Tracks in Parallel -- Strategic and Technical

Strategic Track: Curricular and Organizational Considerations for OCW -- Larry Cooperman of UC Irvine OCW (moderator)

1. From a content/curriculum and organizational perspective, what are the different models for doing an OCW?  5-6 institutions will spend 10 minutes each discussion the organization and curricular decisions that they made, and the costs and benefits of that choice (please do NOT go lightly on cost -- it should be evenly balanced between pro and con):

• MIT's approach (Steve Carson): (PPT)
• OU UK's approach (Andy Lane): (PPT)
• USU OCW's approach (Marion Jenson): (Notes)
• Tufts OCW's approach (Nancy Wilson): (PPT)
• UC Irvine's approach (Larry Cooperman): (PPT)

2. What are the tradeoffs you make when choosing between these models?  What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?  What about common metrics like cost per course, level of effort per course, usage and use habits per course, etc.?  How do they stack up?
3. How do institutions vet curricular quality in OCW beyond syllabi approved by professors/departments? Is there a usability criteria in its posting, eg. can an intended audience use it for learning? Does OCW have expiration dates? (This is on the input side - the decision to post as OCW rather than the evaluation process gathering feedback on its use)

Technical Track: Institutional Project/Tool Technical Overviews and Best Practice Sharing -- (Dr. David Wiley): (Notes)

Each institution will spend -5 minutes per project (there may be multiple projects from each contributor) showing the technical group their current status (both of projects and tools), sharing best practices, perils and pitfalls, and discussing their future plans.

2. Who is/are the primary target audience(s) for OCW?  What are the current, common perceptions about what OCW is among this group?
3. What do we want our target audience to think of, when they think about OCW?
4. What can we do to properly and proactively manage expectations among our target audience, and to build a successful brand name?
